ABOUT ABOUT

Think about going to a big event. Concert, baseball, or even a broadway show. You get to the venue and it is packed. This doesn't effect you as you push your way to where you need to get to. You feel the energy of the crowd and enjoy the event. The night was one of the best you had. Now lets look at the same event through someone that has PTSD.

They look up the venue for the up coming event. Anxiety begins to build because they worry that the venue might be crowded. They talk to their friends and family about it. The radio and the tv are making the event sound like the event of the year, or at least that is how they perceived it to be. But they really want to go. So they drive down to the venue and see the crowd. Their PTSD kicks in full gear. Anxiety hits and they go into full blown panic attack in the car, to scared to get out. They calm down just enough to drive home. Guilt kicks in. They feel like it's their fault they let everyone down.

Not everyone with PTSD has this reaction. People with PTSD could suffer from insomnia, hostility, loss of interest, guilt, flashbacks, mistrust, self-destructive behavior, disassociation, and severe anxiety. Some are able to keep a handle on everything. Other need some help. One of the ways people get some extra help is having a service dog.

Service dogs are trained to the needs of their handler. Some tasks the dogs can be trained for are blocking people to give the handler space, pulling the handler out of the stressful event, fetch medication, and comfort the handler through panic attacks. Training could take 6 months to several years.

So where does the funds go? The money goes to helping pay for training, housing, and food for the service dog. These fundraisers are a key role to helping bring support to someone in need.
